Review
"The text 'Shepherd of souls' has not had a beauty-makeover in years, and it is about time we hear it with a new melody. As with other good SAB writing, Fedak removes even a hint that there is something missing from the vocal parts. Graciously accessible, this communion anthem would grace any choral library." --AAM Journal, December 2005
Description
This warm and welcoming communion anthem for SAB is easy to sing and an effective invitation to the sacrament. The organ accompaniment serves both the enrich the harmonies and provide a gentle counterpoint to the lyrical vocal lines.
Text
Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless
thy chosen pilgrim flock
with manna from the wilderness,
with water from the rock.
We would not live by bread alone,
but by thy word of grace,
in strength of which we travel on
to our abiding place.
Be known to us in breaking bread
but do not then depart;
Savior, abide with us and spread
thy table in our heart.
Lord, sup with us in love divine,
thy Body and thy Blood,
that living bread, that heav'nly wine,
be our immortal food.
Thy Body and thy Blood
be our immortal food.
--James Montgomery, 1825, alt.
