Description
Craig Phillips has written a lyrical and rich piece for cello and organ based on Philip Bliss’s hymn tune VILLE DU HAVRE ("It is well with my soul"). Though suitable for any church occasion or recital, as it is based one of the great hymns of comfort and hope, this would be a particularly poignant and moving selection for a funeral or memorial service when a cellist is available.

"Based on the nineteenth-century hymn tune, VILLE DU HAVRE, this setting for organ and cello is simple and direct, yet sophisticated in detail. Phillips alters the tune to fit into triple meter instead of the original quadruple meter, providing greater flow. Cello and organ are both given the opportunity to shine in the melody, the organ providing the second, grander statement accompanied by joyful rising figures and arpeggios. The piece ends peacefully with some deft harmonic touches." AAM Journal, March/April 2023
