Description
Craig Phillips continues to add to his significant catalog of chamber music for varied solo instruments plus organ with this work for solo bassoon. A slightly mournful (almost Celtic) atmosphere pervades the opening before the work opens up into a section of light and playful character. The final part is lush and warmly romantic, in the classic Phillips manner. The piece ends quietly and affirmatively.

Review
"This piece skillfully charts an emotional journey. It begins with a mysterious D minor melody filled with lovely grace note turns, picking up with a playful middle section in the major, culminating with a rich cantabile melody, and finally returning to the original theme with an enriched accompaniment informed by the middle section. Phillips explores the full compass of the bassoon as well as several different characters of the instrument. The arrival of a cantabile melody at the midpoint of the composition is extremely satisfying, especially as it has a motivic connection to the outer sections. Starting and ending calmly, this would be lovely as a special occasion prelude or recital piece." -AAM Journal, March/April 2023
