Description
Commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for the 2016 National Convention in Houston, this organ/brass/percussion arrangement of one of the great hymns of praise will enliven any festival service. The setting includes an instrumental introduction followed by treatments of the seven sung verses. (The fifth and sixth verses feature women’s and men’s voices respectively.)

Review
"Phillips treats each of the seven stanzas of this hymn differently, but most stay close to the conventional hymnal harmony. The introduction for brass and organ is creative both rhythmically and harmonically. Stanza one assigns a descant to the horn while trumpets, trombone, and tuba double the standard organ accompaniment. Stanza two is for organ and unison congregation, with trumpet descants and timpani rejoining on stanza three. Stanza four features a soprano descant with unison congregation and organ. Stanza five is for unison women, with creative harmonies in the organ accompaniment and lyrical brass melodies. The men follow with stanza six; their organ and brass accompaniment includes some harmonic interest. Stanza seven returns to standard organ harmony, adding brass and timpani fanfares and a recurrence of the soprano descant. Reproducible parts for brass, timpani, descant, organ, and congregation are included." --Cross Accent, Spring 2018
