Description
Written for the dedication of the pipe organ in the composer's church, this work is a sturdy hymn-anthem on the Welsh tune EBENEZER (TON-Y-BOTEL). The original text, by Carl Daw (included) celebrates both the wind of the Spirit and the breath of the organ. George Briggs’s text, "God Has Spoken." is also included, enabling the work to be performed on many other occasions. The choral writing is solid and satisfying, and the opening organ fugue could well be excerpted and used as an independent organ voluntary.
Anthem texts
God has spoken by the prophets--Briggs
Lively Wind That Woke Creation--Daw
God has spoken by the prophets,
spoken the unchanging Word;
each from age to age proclaiming
God the One, the righteous Lord!
’Mid the world’s despair and turmoil
one firm anchor holding fast:
God eternal reigns forever,
God the first and God the last.
God has spoken by Christ Jesus,
Christ, the everlasting Son,
brightness of the Father’s glory,
with the Father ever one;
spoken by the Word incarnate,
God of God ere time was born;
Light of Light, to earth descending,
Christ, as God in human form.
God is speaking by the Spirit,
speaking to our hearts again,
in the agelong word declaring
God’s own message, now as then.
Through the rise and fall of nations
one sure faith is standing fast:
God abides, the Word unchanging,
God the first and God the last.

Lively wind that woke creation,
stirring newborn stars to song,
God’s own breath bestowed on mortals,
rousing sound from throat and tongue.
Holy Spirit, come, sing through us,
help us pray, discern, rejoice,
by your quickening power and presence
give our silent faith a voice.
Guiding wind that led God’s people
day and night with cloud and fire,
searing breath of prophets’ warnings,
awe-filled hymn of seraph choir:
still sustain us when we wander
through the wastes of error’s maze;
by your shaping and perfecting
tune us for eternal praise.
Singing wind of angel-tidings
heralding Messiah’s birth,
mighty breath who blended voices
from all corners of the earth:
fill these pipes of wood and metal,
let them sound with skill and art;
through them wake again creation’s
wordless wonder of the heart.
