Text
Sun emerging in measured time
pulling the diffuse light spread across the horizon
into a focused beam.

So like our lives, emerging from the vastness
of the beginning of time
to experience thought, see beauty, know love.

Creative Spirit,
forgive our prideful thoughts
that we can know or understand the rhythm of life,
calm our restlessness,
allow us to live in the miracle of your creation.

Sun’s rim setting below the horizon
shooting streams of light and untold beauty
leaving behind a trail of light
pointing to a new day in your timeless universe.

Description
This unusual and haunting anthem by Alfred V. Fedak is a setting of a text by Lynda Burton that uses the coming of the morning sun as a metaphor for the emergence of human lives into "the miracle of creation." The opening section is atmospheric music in the Dorian mode followed by a middle section that is prayerful and chorale-like. The final section of the work transforms the opening music into the Mixolydian mode for an evocation of the setting sun. The accompaniment was designed for piano but may be adapted to be played effectively on the organ.
