Review
"How else to sing Psalm 98 than in a fiery, rhythmic 6/8 meter marked with dotted rhythms, sixteenths, and borrowed keys? This piece sounds difficult and is challenging, but probably is accessible to many SATB choirs. The organ part is also rhythmic and often florid with a repeated arpeggiated pattern in the right hand. It has contrasting sections that use the theme in the right hand accompanied by block chords of angular harmonies in the left. Excellent idiomatic organ writing!"--The Hymn, October 2000
"This setting of Psalm 98 has an independent three-stave organ part with solistic interludes. There are mild dissonances which add to the bravura spirit of the music. The syllabic choral parts have dancing rhythms, some unison passages, and build to a big climax at the end. Exciting music." --Diapason, May 2000
Description
Perfect for Thanksgiving, organ dedications, choral festivals, or any festive occasion, this outstanding setting of Psalm 98 bursts with joy and energy! The organ part (written on three staves) is active but not difficult, and gives the piece much of its excitement and drive.
Anthem text
O sing to the Lord an original song!
O sing to the Lord, sing a new song of joy!
For the Lord, our God has declared his victory.
All the ends of the earth, yea, the ends of the earth
have seen the victory of our God!
Sing praises with the lute and harp.
With organ and strings, make the sounds of melody.
Let the trumpets blare; raise a tune with the clarion.
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, our God.
Let the sea awaken and roar;
and all that dwell therein;
let the rush of the waters clap their hands and the hills sing for joy,
the hills sing for joy before the Ruler of all!
O sing to the Lord an original song!
O sing to the Lord, sing a new song of joy!
For the Lord, our God has declared his victory.
All the ends of the earth, yea, the ends of the earth
have seen the victory of our God!
