Review
"Finally, there is Jack Burnam's prize-winning entry in our own 2001 AAM Anthem constest: 'As the deer longs for the waterbrooks' puts me in similar constraints to my beginning with Tallis's 'In jejunio.' It would be as outrageously arrogant to critique our honorable judges' choice as it would be to tout our own prizewinner. What I can say is how immediately I came to treasure this piece and how quickly I would order it and put it into my choir's repertory!" --AAM Journal, December
2001
Description
A dramatic setting of verses selected
from the Psalms and Isaiah 12. The work begins gently, and gradually
builds to a joyous climax before ending peacefully. A prizewinning
anthem in the 2001 composition contest sponsored by the Anglican
Musicians Foundation.
Text
As the deer longs for the waterbrooks,
so longs my soul for you, O God.
My soul is athirst for God, athirst for the
living God.
Those who go through the desolate valley will find it a place
of springs,
for the early rains ahve covered it with pools of water.
They will climb from height to height,
and the God of gods will be revealed in Zion.
Surely, it is God who saves me;
I will trust in God and not be afraid.
For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense;
the Lord will be my Savior.
Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing,
from the springs of salvation.
You speak in my heart and say, "seek
my face."
Your face, Lord, will I seek.
