Description
Scored for SAB voices and organ, this
is a setting of Richard Leach's reworking of passages from St.
Augustine. The message of repentance is nowhere put more clearly:
"The world has toyed with me long enough; to thee I feel
I must return: teach me the way to thee." This is a piece
to sing again and again, during Lent or at any service of penitence.
Text
Hear me, my God, Hear me, my Lord.
My King,
my Father, my Cause, my Hope, my House, my Health,
my Light, my Life, hear me.
Direct me as thou wilt;
command whatever thou wilt;
but grant me this: heal my ears, that I may hear thy speaking.
Heal my eyes, that I may see thy signs.
Drive delusion from my mind, that I may know thee.
Receive thy fugitive, O God;
I have been punished enough;
I have served thine enemies long enough;
the world has toyed with me long enough;
receive me as I flee.
To thee I feel I must return:
knock; may thy door be open to me;
teach me the way to thee.
