Description
Words from Isaiah 42 make this an excellent anthem for occasions celebrating service, especially ministerial service (ordinations, anniversaries, retirements, etc.) Alfred Fedak’s dignified and lyrical music is homophonic and easy to sing, making this an especially good choice for those occasions where a massed choir and visiting members are often involved. Beginning moderately, the piece builds to a broad and exultant conclusion.

Anthem text
This is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom my soul delights:
I have put my Spirit upon him,
he will deal fairly with all.
He shall be gentle,
he will not be discouraged,
he shall not quarrel nor lift up his voice.
A bruised reed he shall not break,
nor quench a dimly burning flame.
This is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom my soul delights:
I have put my Spirit upon him,
he will deal fairly with all.
I the Lord have called you.
I will hold your hand and keep you.
I have given you as a covenant
And a light unto my people,
to open blind eyes and set the pris’ner free.
The former things are passed away:
and new things I declare.
This is my servant whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom my soul delights

--from Isaiah 42
