"Sam Batt Owens's The Lord will come combines phrases from the Collect for Advent III ("Stir up your power, O Lord") with John Milton's apocalyptic hymn 'The Lord will come and not be slow.' As usual, it is finely done and highly recommended, and it will give choirs of modest ability both the affirmation they need and a reason to persevere!" -Journal of the Anglican Association of Musicians, October 1998
"The second piece I particularly like is Sam Batt Owens' The Lord Will Come. This SAB setting is excellent for Advent, but I suggest that you look at this prayer for other use during the year, especially the Pentecost season." -Sacred Music News & Reviews, March 1998
"Anything less than Owen's stalwart tune would be unworthy of Milton's hymn 'The Lord will come and not be slow' from the Scottish Psalter, 1635. The melody is infused with majesty not unlike the tune KINGSFOLD and would be an astute addition to a future hymnal. A gritty statement of the opening petition of the collect for III Advent, 'Stir up your power, O God, and come among us,' frames Milton's hymn. The setting sounds quite full despite the SAB voicing. Recommended." --CrossAccent, Fall 1999
Description A strong Advent anthem for SAB, combining the text of the collect for Advent III ("Stir up your power, O God") with the classic John Milton text ("The Lord will come and not be slow"). The work includes a brief passage for male voices, which could also be sung to good effect by a solo baritone.
Anthem text
Stir up your power, O God,
and come among us.
The Lord will come and not be slow,
his footsteps cannot err;
before him righteousness shall go,
his royal harbinger.
God, judge thou the earth in might,
this wicked earth redress;
for thou art he who shall by right
the nations all possess.
Stir up your power, O God,
and come among us.
The nations all whom thou hast made
shall come, and all shall frame
to bow them low before thee, Lord,
and glorify thy Name.
Stir up your power, O God,
and come among us.
Text: Collect for Advent I, alt. (Book of Common Prayer) and John Milton (1604-1674), alt.
