Review
"This piano/organ duet has a basic ABA form with the A sections having a driving rhythm and the B section comprising a quiet arioso. The piano part requires some good technique and has several parts where the hands are fairly spread, such as the opening figure in the left hand C-G, and then e. It sounds easy at a slow pace, but at the tempo requested, one has to fly a little. The organ part contains some doubling between hands, a couple of running passages delegated to the right hand, and one tricky rhythmic passage in the coda. The organ registration is simple enough that it could be done on a smaller two-manual instrument. I would want the piano close to the organ for this piece, as there is a lot to coordinate." --AAM Journal, May/June 2008
Description
In the Light (2004) for piano and organ was commissioned for and is dedicated to the Canadian ensemble Duo Majoya -- Marnie Giesbrecht (organ) and Joachim Segger (piano). The work was inspired by their vibrant and brilliant playing and their tireless enthusiasm for new music.
The work is a brief fanfare in a straightforward ABA form. The outer sections are energetic and drivingly rhythmic, whereas the middle section is a contemplative arioso.
