Description
Commissioned by the Philadelphia Chapter of the AGO, this straightforward hymn anthem features a new text by Carl Daw focusing on the church's mission and vision. The piece will be useful in any number of situations: as a stewardship anthem, at church dedications or anniversaries, at New Year, or at the beginning of any new undertaking in the church's life. May be sung as a simple choir anthem, or as a concertato with the congregation taking part.
Anthem text
God of the future,
calling us forward,
thaw our inertia,
and wean us from greed;
transform false comfort
into commitment
that we may serve you
in word and in deed.
Where we think justice
will crown our journey,
teach us in mercy
to seek our true home;
when ending bloodshed
seems our best purpose,
show us the deep peace
that lives in shalom.
Widen our vision
to grasp a mission
broader than any
we dream on our own;
help us surrender
all that would hinder
our full intention
to be yours alone.
For our forebodings
give us a foretaste
of all you call us
to do and to be;
God of the future,
still lead us forward
to live as people
whom Christ has set free.
