Review
"Psalm 24 figures in the Advent Lectionary only in Year A. But if that text is associated in one's mind, as in mine, with that time of year, and a break from other familiar treatments of the text is needed, then K. Lee Scott's energetic setting of verses 7-10 might be of interest. Most of the rhythmic challenges lie in the organ part (which has optional brass parts available to supplement it--these need to be ordered separately), but the choral parts will still repay a bit of rhythm-only rehearsal. A da capo repeat of the opening section frames a baritone (or men's sectional) solo for "Who is he?"; the solo returns, in varied form, in the coda. Note that the soprano section is divided about half the time, but the seconds always sing in either 3rds or 4ths with the firsts." --AAM Journal, October 2006
Description
Exuberant outbursts by choir, organ, and optional brass and percussion alternate dramatically with unaccompanied dialogues for solo baritone and chorus, singing "Who is the King of Glory?" "The Lord of Hosts, He is the King of Glory!" A stirring and festive anthem for Palm Sunday or Advent. Great for festivals and joyous occasions.
Anthem text
Lift up your heads, O you gates:
and be you lifted up, O everlasting doors,
and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is he, the King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty, mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O you gates:
and be you lifted up, O everlasting doors,
and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is he, the King of glory?
The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory!
--Psalm 24:7-10
