Text
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O divine Spirit,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardon’d
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

--St. Francis of Assisi

Description
The classic prayer of St. Francis of Assisi ("Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.") is set very imaginatively for double choir. The prayer is articulated fervently by the first choir, while the second choir adds harmonic color and echo to the texture by highlighting words and phrases. Parker's careful part-writing ensures that the work is well within the capabilities of groups who might not otherwise consider performing a work for double choir.
