Review
"This robust organ solo was commissioned and premiered for the Philadelphia American Guild of Organists' January JumpStart 2017. The composition runs the gamut of three manuals and pedal, calling for a contingent of reeds in each division. Sixteenth note rhythms and some changing, irregular meters propel the music forward in a spirited tempo. Phillips' articulative and harmonic detail adds layers of challenge and excitement to the music. Medium level in difficulty, this fiery composition is suitable for recital and festive occasions. Those interested in further experiencing Phillips' Paean may access an audio recording at the publisher's website." --Cross Accent, Spring 2018
"Craig Phillips's Paean...was new to me: it turned out to be a cleverly-constructed example of best practice within the American compositional style, incorporating echoes of the French symphonic school, and Hindemith in the quieter sections, the combination of which served to provide a rich and engaging addition to the organ oeuvre." --AAM Journal, July/August 2018
