Description
David Ashley White's English-language setting of the Dignus es canticle is practical: scored in 2-parts for non-mixed or mixed voices. The accompaniment is effective on either organ or piano. The music features a memorable melody in White's characteristic Mixolydian mode; the texture is generally homophonic with some slight, easy imitation in a few spots.
Text
Splendor and honor and kingly power
are yours by right, O Lord, our God,
for you created everything that is,
and by your will they were created
and have their being:
and yours by right O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have redeemed for God,
from every family, language, people and nation,
a kingdom of priests to serve our God.
And so, to him who sits upon the throne;
and to Christ the Lamb,
be praise, dominion and splendor,
for ever and for evermore.

Review
"A fluid, natural melody typical of David Ashley White's music flows through the three verses of the canticle text. Voices sing in unison for the first verse, then split into two parts with canonic entrances that morph gently into harmony. The accompaniment part is clearly intended for the organ, although accomodation for piano is given. This Eastertide setting could even be adapted for congregational use, and its effective melody would hold up for weekly use throughout the season. Treble choirs or mixed choirs would also find this an excellent piece without requiring extensive rehearsal time." --AAM Journal, May/June 2023 |
