Review
"Written in 1990 in memory of Larry King, this interesting
setting includes chordal writing, quasi-Anglican chant, and random
choral whispers in staggered entries and cutoffs. The tenor solo
is in Hebrew, but an alternate English text version is provided.
The bell part, an ostinato, is easy." -AAM Journal
Description Engquist's
"The 23rd Psalm" is a difficult but exceptional anthem.
He has crafted a wide variety of sounds, textures, and harmonies
in a remarkable fashion, using the voice (sung and whispered,
as solo and choir), organ, and optional handbells. Your choir
will enjoy the challenge of this piece, and they will be well-rewarded
by the result of their labors.
Anthem Text
The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
Mizmor L'David Adonai roi, Lo echsar.
Binot deshe yar bitseini, Al mei m'nuchot y'naha leini.
He leads me beside still waters, he restores
my soul.
He leads me in right paths, for the sake of his name.
Even when i walk in the valley of the shadow of death,
I shall fear no evil for you are with me.
With rod and staff you comfort me.
You have set a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You have anointed my head with oil, my cup over flows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my
life,
and I shall dwell in the house of he Lord forever.
