Description
Based on Matthew 21:9-11, this anthem musically depicts the noise, energy, and commotion surrounding Christ's entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Though written for adults, even high-school-age SATB choirs will be able to render this piece effectively, as the bass part does not drop below third-space E-flat. A welcome addition to the Palm Sunday repertoire.

Text
Hosanna to the Son of David!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord
Hosanna in the highest heaven?
Who is this?
This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee.
Jesus, the prophet, Jesus, the Savior!

--based on Matthew 21:9-11

Review
"The only Palm Sunday anthem in this group [of reviewed anthems] is Ronald Nelson's The Crowds Were Shouting. It is a restless 'Hosanna to the Son of David!' piece, with a middle section that asks 'Who is this?' before returning to the turmoil of the opening. It would be a perfect piece for the distribution of Palms, and choirs will praise Nelson's venerable name for his imaginative, yet accessible, writing." --AAM Journal, November 2002
