Description
Copes has taken Martin Luther's hymn on the baptism of Christ, and the 16th cent. tune by J. Walther for this attractive anthem. He moves from a solo introduction into two-part, two-part canon, three part, and then four-part writing, building to a majestic ending.

Anthem text
To Jordan came our Lord, the Christ,
according to God's willing,
and there was by Saint John baptized,
his mission on earth thus filling.

There did he consecrate a bath
to wash away transgression
and quench the bitterness of death
by his own blood and passion,
he would a new life give us.

Text: Martin Luther, tr. by Richard Massie, 1854

Review
"Some years ago, anthems specifically for the First Sunday after the Epiphany were hard to come by, but To Jordan came and Come, you lovers of the Feasts are two worthy additions to this slim repertoire. To Jordan came is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Bertalot; with restrained imagination, Earle Copes builds a persuasive case for his vision of the tune (CHRIST UNSER HERR ZUM JORDAN KAM)." --AAM Journal, Dec. 1994
