Description
Sedio captures the poignancy of the text on Herod's slaying of the innocent children. This carol was part of the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors in 15th cent. England.

Text
Lully, lulla, thou tiny child, by, by, lully lulla.
O sisters too, how may we do
for to preserve this day.
This poor youngling for whom we sing,
by, by, lully, lullay?
Herod, the king, in his raging,
charged he hath this day.
His men of might, in his own sight,
all young children to slay.

That woe is me, poor child for thee!
And ever morn and day,
for thy parting nor say, nor sing,
by, by, lully, lullay. Lully, lulla, thou tiny child, by, by, lully, lullay.

Text: Coventry Carol, 15th cent. English

Reviews
"Mark Sedio's two carol settings are fresh, unpretentious, and very effective. Come with rejoicing is rollicking good fun, and the imaginative writing in 'The Coventry Carol' belies its slender resources. Recommended." AAM Journal, October 1994

"Mature music in a transparent texture! The singers must be independent -- of each other and of the organ accompaniment -- because the composer has provided a number of delicious surprises. The tune and text are old and familiar, but the accompaniment does more than accompany; it acts as a partner in the sonic experience. Chorally, the nicest surprise is Sedio's treatment of the second stanza in parallel and canonic fifths. A few good singers can make a real addition to the theme of the Slaughter of the Innocents during the Christmas season." - Worship Arts, July-August 2007
