Margaret (Maggie) Burk (b. 1990) is a conductor, composer, and soprano dedicated to the transformative power of choral music. She is Director of Choral Activities at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis., where she directs the award-winning Carthage Choir, teaches coursework in conducting and music education, and serves as Artistic Director for the Carthage Christmas Festival. Active as a clinician throughout the country, she recently made her All-State debut conducting the All-Virginia Treble Choir (2022) and will serve as Music Director for the Royal School of Church Music's Midwest Course in Evansville, Ind., in 2023; previously, she has also served on the faculties of the RSCM's King's College Course (Pennsylvania) and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians' Conference on Worship, Music, and the Arts at Montreat (N.C.).
Maggie received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting at the University of Michigan, where she studied with Eugene Rogers. At Michigan, she directed the Arts Chorale and the University Choir and served as the Assistant Conductor of the Men's and Women's Glee Clubs; additionally, she taught Sounds from Within, a music workshop at Saginaw Correctional Facility. She earned the Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music/Institute of Sacred Music, where she received the Robert Shaw prize for outstanding achievement in choral conducting and the Institute's Faculty Prize for academic excellence and community engagement. She holds the Bachelor of Music degree summa cum laude from St. Olaf College (Minn.).
In addition to her conducting and teaching, Maggie is an active composer; her works have been performed throughout the United States and the United Kingdom and have been broadcast on BBC Radio. She is published by Hal Leonard and Selah Publishing. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, running, hiking, and spending time with her two senior rescue cats. |
