Description
One of Phillips' easier organ solos, this accessible and dramatic suite is perfect for service or recital use. The short movements explore the contrasting characters of the four traditional archangels. "Michael" is a trumpet processional; "Gabriel" presents a lyric melody in the pedals, sounding above a flowing accompaniment in the manuals; "Raphael" is a lush cantilena; and "Uriel" is a dramatic and vivid toccata.

Review
"Suitable in its entirety for recital use, the four movements of this collection can be excerpted effectively for worship services as well. Subtitles clearly refer the listener to the mythological personalities of different angels. A martial opening in trumpet-tune style portrays St. Michael, the chief angelic adversary of Satan. Contrasting is a quietly but steadily flowing 9/8 movement entitled 'Gabriel, Messenger of the Annunciation.' The tone painting for Raphael, the archangel of healing, is a shimmering meditation for celestes, while the finale, dedicated to the archangel of light, Uriel, is a toccata in the French style. Moderately difficult." --Worship Arts, Jan.-Feb. 2014
