Description
This lovely pastorale, using the first and last portions of Psalm 122, is really a prayer for peace. The gentle accompaniment features two descanting treble instruments, with parts printed in both Bb and C for maximum flexibility. The choir's SATB passages are unaccompanied and not at all difficult.

Anthem text
I was glad when they said to me, "Let us go to the house of the Lord!"
"Peace be within your walls and security within your towers!"
For my brethren and companions' sake I will say "Peace be within you!"
For the sake of the house of the Lord our God I will seek your good.

-Psalm 122:1, 7-9

Review
"Carl Schalk's short, lyrical setting of Psalm 122, (I was glad when they said to me, 'Let us go to the house of the Lord!') is scored for SATB choir, organ, and two treble instruments. The composer provides parts for flute and Bb clarinet, but also includes a part for C clarinet. Therefore, the conductor has the opportunity to use any two treble instruments available; two violins would work beautifully. The choral writing is straightforward, and the ranges are moderate, making this piece approachable by the average church adult choir, or even an advanced youth choir. There are sections in the middle for either soprano or alto soloists or section solos, again giving the piece flexibility in performance. Schalk has set the piece in a lilting 6/8, emphasizing the gentler qualities of the text in the choral writing. The piece would be appropriate in any season of the year and could be used either as an anthem or an extended introit. The instrumental sections at the beginning, middle, and end of the composition (serving more or less as ritornelli) are written so that even beginning players could find success." --Choral Journal, December 2000
