Description
A beautiful text to open the service of celebration going from darkness into light. Sedio's setting reflects the intensity and depth of the words.

Text
O night more light than day,
more bright than the sun,
O night more white than snow,
more brilliant than many torches.
O night of more delight than is paradise.

Night devoid of all dark,
O night dispelling sleep
and teaching us the vigilance of angels.
O night at which the demons tremble,
night of all nights in all the year desired.

Night of the church's wedding,
night of new birth in baptism,
night when the Devil slept and was stripped,
night when the heir took the heiress to enjoy their inheritance.

Christ yesterday and today,
the beginning and the end,
Alpha and Omega all time belongs to him,
and all the ages to him be glory and power.
Through every age forever. Amen.

Text: Asterius of Amasia, 4th cent., trans. by Walter Mitchell

Review
"How good it is to have anthems specifically for this pivotal liturgy! For a long time, we have had to press Easter Day anthems into service, despite the conflict of ethos. based on text which truly contribute[s] to the liturgy itself, and [is a] valid musical statement which also contributes without competing with the liturgical climaxes of the event (the lighting of the Paschal Candle, Exultet, Gloria in excelsis, etc.). Personally, I am more taken with Mark Sedio's choice of text and style of composition." -AAM Journal, 3/95

"This is a useful piece for the Vigil celebration, almost a quasi chant/Russian flavor, in unison to 6 part setting. Easy." -Cross Accent, July 1995
