Description
David Ashley White has set this classic text in a brief, expressive, and largely homophonic setting for SATB voices (no divisi) that would be especially suitable as an introit (or a Lessons & Carols offering) during the Advent/Christmas season.

Anthem text
There is no rose of such virtue
As is the rose that bare Jesu:
Alleluia.

There is no rose of such virtue
as is the rose that bare Jesu:
Alleluia.

For in this rose contained was
heaven and earth in little space:
Res miranda.

By that rose we may see
that he is God in person three:
Pari forma.

The angels sung the shepherds to:
“Gloria in excelsis deo”:
Gaudeamus.

Leave we all in this worldly mirth
and follow we this joyful birth:
Transeamus.

–English traditional, ca. 1420

Review
"The familiar medieval carol text is set in an expressive homophonic texture that conforms to tonal expectations while allowing spicy modal inflections. The Dorian mode is unchallenged throughout, although White inflects the harmony with typical minor-key conventions to add spice and interest. Part ranges are modest, and despite one measure of tenor division, smaller choirs would have little trouble with this intimate setting." -AAM Journal, Sept./Oct. 2023
