Description
This delightful Dutch carol (with its English text by G. R. Woodward) is arranged colorfully by William Witherup. Each verse of the text uses a different flower as its primary image and receives a contrasting musical setting before the celebratory refrain. While the carol is often sung at Christmas, there is nothing about the text to limit it to that season, and the spring/flower imagery is well-suited to Eastertide.

Anthem text
King Jesus hath a garden,
filled with divers flow'rs
where I go culling posies gay,
all times and hours.
Refrain:
There naught is heard but Paradise bird,
harp, dulcimer, lute, with cymbal,
trump and tymbal, and the tender soothing flute.

The Lily white in blossom there, is purity:
the Violet, with sweet perfume, Humility.
The bonny Damask Rose is known as Patience.
The blithe and thrifty Marygold, Obedience.
Refrain

The Crown Imperial bloometh too in yonder place,
'tis charity, of stock divine, the flow'r of grace.
Refrain

Ah! Jesu Lord, my heal and weal,
my bliss complete, make thou my heart
thy garden plot, fair, trim and neat.
Refrain:
That I may hear this musick clear,
harp, dulcimer, lute, with cymbal,
trump and tymbal, and the tender soothing flute.

--Traditional Dutch, from Geestlijcke Harmonie, 1633; tr. George Woodward in Songs of Syon, 1908.
