Reviews
"The spiritual Give me Jesus, simply and effectively arranged for unaccompanied SATB by William C. Witherup."-Bulletin ofThe Hymn Society of Great Britain and Ireland, April 1996

"Finally, there is my personal favorite: William Witherup's effortlessly simple Give Me Jesus. Any choir capable of four-part unaccompanied hymn singing will sound great with this piece, and yet it is easy, elegant, and deeply moving. In short, it is highly recommended." -Journal of the Association of Anglican Musicians, February 1998

"This is a rather simple yet very effective arrangement of the well-known spiritual. The choir sings 'backup' for the soloists on verse one and almost all of verse two; the choir takes verse three. Singers need learn only two verses, though, as their parts on verses one and three are virtually identical. The part writing is solid but not necessarily predictable. Aside from a couple of measures in the tenor line, the tessitura of each part is quite comfortable. There are long phrases, requiring singers to employ proper breath control. Good soloists, especially the soprano, are a must. A worthy addition to your library and a definite winner with your parish!" -Pastoral Music, Oct. 2009

Description A simple, eloquent, and timeless setting of the traditional spiritual, with a short soprano solo. One of the finest anthems we've seen on this tune.

Text
O, when I am alone,
O, when I am alone,
O, when I am alone, give me Jesus,
give me Jesus, give me Jesus.
You may have all the world
but give me Jesus.

O, when I come to die,
O, when I come to die,
O, when I come to die, give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus, give me Jesus,
You may have all the world,
but give me Jesus.

O, When I sing,
O, when I sing,
O, when I sing, give me Jesus.
Give me Jesus, give me Jesus.
You may have all the world,
but give me Jesus.

Text: Traditional African American spiritual
